The Quote That Had Me Thinking All Week

“All of us dream of being part of something greater than ourselves. All of us want to make a contribution. The greatest contribution you make isn't in the money you give to charities. It isn't in the nonprofit foundations you establish. And it isn't in the work you do as a volunteer. Your greatest contribution to something greater, to the lives of others, comes in what you do from nine to five.” ― Howard Bloom, The Genius of the Beast: A Radical Re-Vision of Capitalism
I was thinking about this quote for a while and couldn't shake the feeling that he was wrong. Sometimes you can't help the job you have, or the town you grew up in. It takes time to find what you love to do, so if volenteering after work makes life more meaningfull and fulfilling then your going to do it. We want to help our comunities and make the world a better place.
But maybe he is right. If what were doing from nine to five isn't what makes us feel like "apart of something greater" then why are we there? When we feel as passionate about something like volunteering and giving money to charities then we would do anything to do so.
Is he saying, "Unless we feel like our nine to five job is the best contribution we can make to our community then there's no use in having your spare time thrown into something you can't give your whole heart or time into". That's the only way I can understand this quote. I would love to hear anyone else's opinion on this quote, maybe I'm reading it in the wrong point of view.
